Academic Recovery Status

What is Academic Recovery?

Academic Recovery status at Jamestown Community College means a student is not meeting the minimal standards based on Federal Aid Eligibility Chart A. Typically, achieving a "satisfactory level" entails maintaining a 2.00 GPA and earning a sufficient number of credit hours.

Students in Academic Recovery who continue to fall short of this standard may be placed in Academic Jeopardy status.

What happens if you are placed in Academic Recovery?

We see many reasons why students find themselves in Academic Recovery. It is rare that the only reason is academic; students find themselves overwhelmed with balancing school and the rest of life.

It is strongly encouraged to meet with a counselor from the Success Center to identify specific reasons for academic struggles. Counselors will assist in devising a Success Plan for the next semester to support academic success.

It is strongly recommended to discuss your financial aid eligibility with Financial Aid & Billing prior to the beginning of the semester. Failure to maintain satisfactory progress may result in you being ineligible for financial aid, potentially resulting in tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses becoming your responsibility.

Support Services for Your Success Plan

JCC offers numerous learning and holistic support services, and the Success Plan developed with the JCC counselor will help determine the most appropriate services for you.

Can you appeal Academic Recovery?

Students retain the right to appeal any academic standings decision. However, since Academic Recovery is based on a mathematical calculation from Chart A, it's unlikely that the designation will be revoked

1. Submit a Written Appeal

If you believe a calculation error has occurred, you can submit a written appeal to the Academic Standings Committee for review. The Academic Standings Committee, made up of faculty members, meets monthly to consider appeals.

The appeal letter should be:

  • Emailed to StudentAffairs@mail.sunyjcc.edu, or
  • Submitted to the Student Affairs office on the Jamestown Campus, Success Center at the Cattaraugus County Campus, or main office at the North County Center.
2. Receive Appeal Outcome

You will receive an email on behalf of the chair of the Academic Standings Committee regarding the outcome of your appeal.

  • Appeal approved: If a calculation error is identified resulting in meeting the criterion on Chart A, your Academic Recovery status will be lifted. However, you may still be subject to Progress Probation or Warning Status.
  • Appeal denied: You have the option to appeal to the vice president of Academic Affairs. The information on how to contact the vice president will be included in the response from the Academic Standings Committee. The vice president will gather and review the information to date prior to scheduling a meeting with you. You should be prepared to provide clear evidence of an error in calculation based on Chart A. The decision of the vice president will be final.
