College Connections Instructor Qualifications

Teaching in College Connections

College Connections instructors must meet the same credentialing standards as those who teach on campus. Each department has their own requirements.

Art (ART)

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in fine arts preferred; a master’s degree in art education or an art-related field (e.g. art history, art therapy, digital media) considered; and
  • a digital slide portfolio of current professional works in the related medium (5 to 20 works);
  • a digital slide portfolio of student work samples in the same (or similar) mediums/media (5 to 20 works).
Biology (BIO)

BIO 1500, 1510, 1570

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in biology/chemistry or a closely related discipline.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree (or higher) in biology/chemistry or a closely related discipline. Additional degrees in a related field may be considered when a candidate possesses relevant teaching experience. Preference given to those with college level or AP high-school level teaching.

*Faculty adjuncts may be asked to complete course audits, professional development opportunities, or additional classroom observations in their first 2 years of teaching if hired without the preferred qualifications.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology; and
  • At least 30 credit hours in biology, with a minimum of 8 credit hours at the graduate level.
Business (BUS)

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business education.

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration (or sub-discipline such as marketing, management, HRM, finance). The degree must include courses in the following subject areas (at either the graduate or undergraduate level):
    • Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, or Management & Organizational Behavior.

Note: Entrepreneurship experience may be considered as a replacement to some courses.

BUS 1500, 1700

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration or business education to include at least five of the seven courses in the following subject areas (at either the graduate or undergraduate level):
    • Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, or Organizational Behavior and Management Information Systems.

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA or MS in accounting or finance and professional certification (CPA, CMA, CIA, CFA, CFM, CFE, EA). Significant accounting experience may be substituted for certification; or
  • a bachelor’s degree and an MBA with an accounting concentration (12 credit hours) or MS in accounting or finance; or
  • a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MS or professional certification (noted above); or
  • a bachelor’s degree with a major in business with an accounting concentration (minimum of 24 credit hours) and professional certification (noted above).

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in business administration (or sub-discipline such as marketing, management, HRM, finance) or business education. The degree must include courses in the following subject areas (at either the graduate or undergraduate level):

Communication (CMM)

Requirements:

  • a master's degree in communication or related field (i.e.: public relations, marketing, journalism, English, etc.) or a bachelor's degree in communication or related field and relevant life experience in the field of communication; and
  • 12 credit hours of communication coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Preferred: teaching experience within the discipline.

CMM 1610

CMM 1610 Public Speaking

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in communication or related field (i.e. public relations, marketing, journalism, English, etc.) or a bachelor’s degree in communication or related field and relevant life experience in the field of communication; and
  • the ability to demonstrate appropriate public speaking skills.

Preferred: teaching experience within the discipline.

CMM 2840

CMM 2840 Film Study and Appreciation

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in cinema, communication, English, or related field (i.e. video production, journalism, film studies, visual arts, etc.) or a bachelor’s degree in visual arts, media production, or related field and
  • relevant life experience in the field; and
  • 12 credit hours of related coursework at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Preferred: teaching experience within the discipline.

Computer Science (CSC)

CSC 1510

  • CSC 1510 Introduction to Computer Science

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree in a computer-related discipline (e.g., computer science, computer technology, information technology) or a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics along with college coursework in computer software development; and
  • coursework or extensive experience in the last five years covering productivity software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation), webpage development (HTML and CSS), object-oriented programming, computer hardware, and system software, and computer networks.

CSC 1530

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree in a computer-related discipline (e.g., computer science, computer technology, information technology); and
  • coursework in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; and
  • coursework in server-side scripting (PHP preferred).

CSC 1560

  • CSC 1560 Computer Application Software I

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a computer-related discipline (e.g., computer science, computer technology, information technology) or business; and
  • coursework beyond the introductory level in microcomputer applications (spreadsheets, database management).

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree in a computer-related discipline (e.g., computer science, computer technology, information technology); and
  • at least 12 credit hours of programming in an object-oriented programming language; and
  • coursework in data structures and algorithms (may be part of the data structures course); and
  • at least one year experience teaching/working with an object-oriented programming language.
Criminal Justice (CRI)

Economics (ECO)

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree including 9 credit hours of economics coursework, such as Macroeconomic Principles, Microeconomic Principles, Intermediate Macroeconomics or Intermediate Microeconomics, History of Economic Thought, Econometrics, Monetary Policy, Money and Banking, or similar courses.

Note: The specific degree area would generally be either business-related or history, although this is not meant to exclude other disciplines, provided that the economics coursework is included in the academic history.

Note: Home economics and/or consumer economics are specifically excluded from the list of acceptable economics courses to be counted in the 9 required hours.

Education (EDU)

Engineering (ENR)

  • a bachelor’s degree in one of the areas listed below:
    • engineering science; or
    • mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial technology; or
    • technology education – with an emphasis in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial technology; and
  • at least 6 credit hours related to the engineering design process (e.g., Introduction to Engineering Design, Manufacturing Drawing, and Manufacturing Processes).

Note: An instructor who holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in another STEM field and has a completed an approved training program related to engineering science may be considered.

English (ENG)

ENG 1510, 1530

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in English; or
  • at least 18 graduate credit hours in English literature or composition from an MA English program; or
  • a master’s degree in literacy, reading, or related area in addition to at least 2 years of experience teaching composition.

Upon request, evaluation of non-English graduate credit may be done on a case-by-case basis.

ENG 1540

  • ENG 1540 Introduction to Literary Studies

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in English; or
  • at least 18 graduate credit hours in English literature or composition from an MA English program; or
  • a master’s degree in literacy, reading, or related area in addition to at least 2 years of experience teaching literature.

Upon request, evaluation of non-English graduate credit may be done on a case-by-case basis.

ENG 2000 level

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree in English; or
  • at least 18 graduate credit hours in English literature or composition from an MA English program; or
  • a master’s degree in literacy, reading, or related area in addition to at least 2 years of experience teaching composition; and
  • one year successful teaching of the ENG first year sequence or ENG 1540 in particular.
French (FRE)

Requirements:

  • a master's degree in French (preferred) or Education; and
  • teaching experience; and
  • Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of Advanced Low or higher within the past five years.

*Applicants must select the "ACTFL OPI" option, which is an unscripted, approximately 30-minute phone call conversation with a Certified ACTFL Tester.

Preferred: foreign travel in a French-speaking country.

Geology (GLG)

  • at least three years teaching experience in the field
  • personal and/or professional experience related to global challenges

Preferred: International travel/study abroad experience

Candidates will need to demonstrate the ability to teach across disciplines.

Requirements:

  • an associate’s or other two-year college degree in biology or a healthcare-related discipline (e.g. human anatomy/physiology, microbiology, health education, health and wellness, health studies/sciences, or a clinical healthcare field); and
  • at least one academic term of prior high school, technical (vocational) school, or college experience teaching at least one didactic and/or clinical course in the disciplines indicated above.
  • Preferred: a bachelor’s or other four-year college degree in the disciplines indicated above.

HCR 1460

Requirements:

  • a master's degree in an appropriate science or related discipline (e.g. health education, biology, or health science); and
  • previous experience teaching health education, with an in-depth understanding of the body systems; and
  • current instructor certification for American Heart Basic Life Support; and
  • current certification card and instructor certification for First Aid.

  • a bachelor’s degree in a relevant content area (e.g., engineering science, mechanical technology, manufacturing technology, industrial technology) or technology education with emphasis in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial technology; and

  • at least 6 credit hours to include coursework in both 2D drafting and 3D solid modeling of individual parts & assemblies.

Music (MUS)

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or arts in music from an accredited institution. It is preferred that the degree-granting institution have a department of music or school of music that is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
  • degree coursework must include at least four semesters (or six quarters) of work in music theory and the same amount of coursework in aural skills. This includes courses such as Aural Skills I, Music Theory I, Music Theory II, Ear Training I, Ear Training and Sight Singing I, etc. taken during the first two years of undergraduate work, but does not include courses such as Music Theory Fundamentals or Fundamentals of Music.
  • degree coursework must include at least two semesters (or three quarters) of work in music history at the upper level of the undergraduate sequence. This includes courses such as Music History I, History of Music: Antiquity to the Renaissance, History of Music: Baroque, etc. but does not include courses such as World Music, Music Appreciation, or Introduction to Music.
Physical Education (PHE)

Theatre (THE)

THE 1510

  • THE 1510 Introduction to Theatre

Requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree or BFA in theatre or other qualifying equivalents in Greek Drama, Medieval Drama, Italian and Elizabethan Renaissance Drama, French Drama of the Late Seventeenth Century; and
  • basic knowledge of technical theatre – i.e. sound, lighting, and costuming.

THE 1570

  • THE 1570 Acting

Requirements:

  • a bachelor's degree; and
  • experience teaching an acting course at the high school level or in a community theater capacity; and
  • acting or directing experience on stage, either in community or college theater productions.

Preferred: a bachelor's degree in theater arts, musical theater, acting, drama, or related field; a master's degree in secondary education with emphasis in performance or theater arts; 5+ years teaching experience in theater arts or acting; 2+ years directing experience in community or school theater productions.

Welding (WLD)

Requirements:

  • an associate’s degree in welding engineering/technology; or

  • at least ten years (full-time) of hands-on experience in the field of welding.
