JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — SUNY Jamestown Community College introduced newly-elected Student Senators for the Jamestown Campus and Dunkirk North County Center during a “cookalong” with Mary Ryder, SNAP-ED nutritionist from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County, and Daniel DeMarte, president of SUNY JCC.
The college purchased apples from Miller’s Apples in Dunkirk for events at the North County Center and Jamestown Campus. Students were given apples during the presentations and encouraged to take enough with them to make the recipe at home.
Ryder demonstrated “Not Your Everyday Apples,” a simple skillet recipe from FoodHero.org that uses apples, raisins, butter and brown sugar. Students in the audience chatted and asked questions during the demonstration, while Senate members and DeMarte worked to replicate Ryder’s dish at an adjacent table.
on making an apple recipe.
Everyone in the room tried the recipe, and many commented favorably on taste and ease of preparation.
“It was wonderful to share with students and see how eager they were to learn about eating healthfully,” Ryder said. “The students expressed enough interest that we hope to bring more events like this to the Student Union for them.”
Sophomore representative Gen Hasegawa of Kanazawa, Japan, was elected president of the Student Senate at the group’s first official meeting Sept. 19. He joined DeMarte in leading the Senate table to successfully prepare the recipe.
“I think it was good to meet the students this way, and I liked cooking the recipe with an audience,” Hasegawa said. “That is not something you get to do often.”
The Senate approved several club charters and elected officers. Hasegawa is joined by freshman Kiara Maren of Durban, South Africa as vice president; sophomore Jaylynn Alio of Staten Island as secretary; sophomore Jang-Yun Park of Seoul, Korea as co-treasurer; freshman Tayanda Sebalo of Johannesburg, South Africa as co-treasurer; sophomore Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo of Makhanda, South Africa as student trustee; sophomores Stephanie Arleo-Gil and Pablo Guzman Morales of Jamestown; and freshmen Nicole Berry of Cape Town, South Africa, and Mufaro Malungisa of Centurion, South Africa.
The North County Center elected Johnathan Rivera of Dunkirk as sophomore representative and Mia Gorka of Fredonia as freshman representative.
“This was an uplifting event to take part in,” said DeMarte. “We have a diverse group of senators to lead our student body, and it was good to leave the Student Union knowing we had learned things that can help us all improve our health and wellness, thanks to CCE Chautauqua.”
