In a unique blend of art and education, high school students from Jamestown and Dunkirk recently participated in a hands-on glass blowing class at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Ninth graders involved in SUNY Jamestown Community College’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) cohort delved into the ancient craft of glass blowing and created their own ornaments under the guidance of expert instructors.

GEAR UP students received a guided tour of the Corning Museum of Glass.

The students were introduced to the fundamentals of glass blowing and learned about the tools, techniques, and safety measures essential to the craft. They also enjoyed a demonstration by professional glassblowers that was inspiring and educational. The professionals created intricate pieces, demonstrating advanced techniques and the delicate balance of heat, timing, and artistic skill that glass blowing demands.

The visit included a guided tour of the Corning Museum of Glass. The students explored the museum's extensive collection, which spans 3,500 years of glassmaking history. Highlights of the tour included ancient artifacts, contemporary glass art, and interactive exhibits that explained the science behind glassmaking. The museum's knowledgeable guides provided rich context and stories, making the tour informative and engaging.

This enriching experience was made possible through a partnership between the JCC GEAR UP program and Chautauqua Striders. GEAR UP aims to prepare students for higher education by providing them with unique learning opportunities.

The trip to the Corning Museum of Glass not only introduced the students to a new art form but also sparked curiosity and inspired a deeper appreciation for the art and science of glassmaking.

"The hands-on experience and the opportunity to witness expert glassblowers in action was truly inspiring for our students," said JCC GEAR UP Program Director, Nichole Segrue. "The educational tour provided a broader understanding of the history and science behind glassmaking, making this a memorable and impactful day for everyone involved."

Students departed with new skills, a sense of accomplishment, and an enriched understanding of a timeless art form. The Corning Museum of Glass experience is sure to be a cherished memory and a source of inspiration for their future educational journeys.
