From mommy shaming to social media censorship of brelfies (breastfeeding selfies), mothers in the U.S. face numerous forms of social oppression regulating their lives, but contemporary artist/mothers are pushing back with artwork that profoundly challenges cultural assumptions about gender, labor, and the ethics of care. Using and deconstructing metaphors of the mirror, which have been foundational in psychoanalytic constructions of the self, subjectivity, and motherhood, in this Zoom presentation, Dr. Robert Shane shows how artists are forging new visions of maternal agency by reflecting their own experiences.
Shane received his PhD in Art History & Criticism from Stony Brook University. Dr. Shane is curatorial consultant at the University at Albany, N.Y., and Gallery Program Coordinator at Collar Works, Troy, N.Y. His scholarly research has appeared in the feminist philosophy journal Hypatia, and he is a regular contributor to The Brooklyn Rail and Whitehot Magazine.
