A Student's Perspective

Read what Jill Mahon, a 2009 JCC graduate and current student at the Stony Brook Medical School, has to say about the biotechnology program:

I came to JCC in 2007, already tired of school. I was planning on taking only the minimum classes needed to transfer to optometry school. I was well on the part-time, no-frills path when I heard about a summer research program. That changed everything.

SURI (Summer Undergraduate Research Initiative) opened my eyes to a whole new world of research, where labs aren't recipes found in workbooks and you don't know what your results will be before you start. It gave me a chance to think outside the box and generate my own ideas.

Through SURI [and classes like] genetics, cell and molecular biology, and immunology, I learned the process that happens before the textbook is written - the countless hours of designing and modifying experiments to uncover just a little more truth about what's really going on in the world.

Thank you for believing in me, and for being there for me when I needed help. Thank you for your tough exams and high expectations; it kept me on my toes, and I'm better prepared for the world now because of it. Thank you for everything.
