The advantages of an education in biotechnology at JCC

Students in the Jamestown Community College biotechnology program gain the technical skills and techniques they need to perform in a working laboratory. JCC provides advanced equipment and facilities and emphasizes applied learning. As part of this emphasis on applied learning, several JCC biotechnology students have interned at area universities. To determine the effectiveness of our program and the progress they made during their internships, our students were evaluated based on their professional conduct and their laboratory notebooks.

In addition to pure data, we also asked supervisors of our interns to provide us with some feedback on our students and their level of preparedness and ability. The following comments were selected from the formative and summative Professional Conduct Rubrics and Laboratory Notebook Rubrics. Names of individual students have been redacted.

  • Overall, [student's] notebook was among the best of all students' to ever rotate in my lab.
  • [Student] functioned at the level of a graduate student by the end of the rotation. Did a fantastic job overall.
  • [Student] made an excellent lab book. I will be showing it to the professor who teaches the technical communications course as a suggestion for an activity for our students.
  • I think [student] is fantastic, in the top 1% of students in [student's] age group and in the top 10% even of masters level students that I have had in terms of [student's] ability to put effort into understanding the experiment and troubleshooting unexpected outcomes. I will hire [student] next summer if I can get enough funding. 
  • [Student] is tremendously competent in many of the laboratory techniques that [student] learned prior to entering my lab (e.g., PCR, preparation of regents). 

Biotechnology Advisory Committee

The Biotechnology Advisory Committee is responsible for helping JCC develop the biotechnology program as it stands today, with an eye towards teaching crucial research and technical skills and promoting creative, original thinking. 

  • Jacqueline Crisman, Ph.D. - Coordinator of Biotechnology, Associate Professor of Biotechnology, and Director of the HURI SURI program at JCC (an almost $1 million NSF funded project working with 23 area high schools to implement curriculum drawn heavily from Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Call to Action (brochure and full report) published by AAAS and NSF and High-Impact Educational Practices as put forth by AACU)
  • Tim Johnson - Program Manager for the HURI SURI program
  • Jeff Bemis, Ph.D. - Director of Clinical Studies at Litron Labs in Rochester, NY
  • John Aletta, Ph.D. - Director of Research at CH3 Biosystems in Amherst, NY
  • Eric Otto, M.S. - Technical Manager at Genecor/Dupont Industrial Biosciences in Rochester, NY
  • Nicholas Risch, M.S. - Technical Application Specialist at Life Technologies in Grand Island, NY
  • Dennis Lefler - Director of Operations at Trinity Biotech in Jamestown, NY
  • Margaret Cornell - Performed clinical research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and is now retired. She is currently serving as a member of the JCC Board of Trustees.
